Rustic Apple Hand Pies
We are calling these apple hand pies ‘rustic’ because they are not the daintiest looking desserts. Pure unadulterated deliciousness lies in the taste and texture of the filling and the crust though!
Rustic Apple Hand Pies
Ingredients
Pastry Crust
- 2 1/4 cup flour
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 3/4 cup plant-butter chilled
- 1/2 cup ice water
Apple Filling
- 2 large apples cut into 1/2 inch chunks
- 1/2 tbsp lemon juice fresh squeezed
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tiny pinch cloves
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450
Apple Filling
- Combine apples, maple syrup, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt together in a medium saucepan or skillet over low-medium heat. While occasionally stirring, bring to a simmer. Allow to simmer for 2 minutes. Finish with lemon juice
Pastry Crust
- Add flour, sugar, and salt to a bowl and mix well. Add chilled, cubed plant-butter and combine with a pastry cutter until crumbly. Add 4-6 tablespoons of cold water, as needed, to bring the dough together into a solid ball.
Assemble
- Roll out dough.Cut into smaller squares/rectangles (we ended up with 5).Spoon filling over 1/2 of the square and fold dough over filling.Place on a baking sheet.Bake until golden brown, about 18-20 minutes.Enjoy!
